After Prince very rapidly sold the 100 S54A-1 Skyline GTs they had to build for homologation for the 1964 Japanese Grand Prix they decided to put the car into full production. The new models would be designated the S54A-2 and the S54B-2. As with the previous model, the Skyline would be based on a lengthened version of the current Skyline 1500 sedan, in this case it was based on the S50E-2.
When the first model Skyline GT went into production it was fitted with the 106hp Prince 1988cc overhead cam 2 litre engine from the Prince Gloria sedan, which had a single down draught carburetor, the triple Weber 40DCOE side draught carburetor setup as used on the race versions was available as an optional extra should you wish to add it. For this car they instead decided to offer two versions of the car, the S54A-2 Skyline GT-A, which had the single carburetor engine, and the S54B-2 Skyline GT-B which had the triple Weber carburetors.
There were other mechanical differences as well with the GT-B having a 5 speed ZF gearbox and a limited slip differential and the GT-A having a 4 speed gearbox and a regular differential.
The cars could be identified from the outside due to slightly different badges on the side of the car, on the GT-A the GT badge was blue and white whilst of the GT-B it was red and white.
On the 4 cylinder S50E-2 Skyline 1500 there was a change to the tail light design for 1965 that now featured a sideways D shaped tail light cluster instead of the big round tail lights on the S50E-1. This change was not made to the GT models and they continued to use the round tail lights of the old model.
This model was in production until October 1966 when it was replaced with the S54A-3 and S54B-3 models.
This was the higher specification model with triple carbs, a 5 speed gearbox and a limited slip diff.
This was the lower specification model with a single carb and a 4 speed gearbox.
The Skyline GT was based on the 4 cylinder Skyline 1500.
