CONY

Aichi Machine Industry Co.

Explore the range of Cony Kei Cars built by the Aichi Machine Industry Co., which merged with the Nissan Motor Co. in 1965.

Aichi was started in 1898 as the Aichi Watch and Electric Manufacturing Co., making as the name suggests, watches and electrical components. In 1920 Aichi entered into a technical alliance with the German aircraft manufacturer Heinkel and started building both civilian and military aircraft, but during the Second World War production shifted to only military and training aircraft.

After the conclusion of the Second World War Aichi began manufacturing small commercial vehicles. Initially they built vehicles under the brand name Giant, with the Giant AA1 three wheel truck being the first model. In 1959 they adopted the name Cony as their brand name and released the Cony Giant AA27 three wheeler. Then late in 1959 they began making Kei class 4 wheel commercial vehicles with 359cc 2 cylinder engines such as the Cony Coach and Cony Guppy. The Guppy sold in far smaller numbers than expected and as a result in 1962 the company had posted a financial loss of 140 million yen, after which they entered into an alliance with the Nissan Motor Co., with Nissan initially buying a 15% stake in Aichi which would eventually become full ownership.

Cony vehicles would stay in production until 1970, after that the Aichi factory was used to build Nissan/Datsun models such as the Cherry, Pulsar, Vanette and Serena.

Below is a selection of the main Cony and Giant models, though it is not a definitive list.
