1961 Prince Gloria BLSIP-3

Mobirise

Introduced in February 1961, the BLSIP-3 was the final upgrade of the original Gloria model. As with the previous Glorias, the BLSIP-3 was the same as the Prince Skyline from the same year, but had different trim and a more luxurious interior. This Gloria was based on the BLSID-3 Skyline.

Visually there is very little to tell the new model apart from the previous BLSIP-2 Gloria, in fact the only significant difference is that the new car has a gold Prince badge on the front right side of the bonnet, whilst the former model has PRINCE in individual gold letters at the bottom of the grille. It continues to use the same side trim and rear trim panels as the previous model.

The main change to the car was it's new engine. The old 80hp FG4B-30 engine has been replaced by the new FG4B-40 engine, which is also rather cryptically known also as the GB4. This new engine is the same size as the previous one, at 1862cc, but thanks to a new cylinder head design, plus new manifolds and carburettor, it's output has jumped from 80hp to 94hp. Previously the Skyline had always run a 1484cc engine and the Gloria has always had the bigger 1862cc unit, but for 1961 the BLSI-3 series Skyline also used the 1862cc engine as standard. The 1961 Gloria and Skyline engines are essentially the same, except the Skyline version has a slightly lower compression ration, at 8:1 rather than 8.5:1, which gave it 3hp less.

The BLSIP-3 continued in production until September 1962, when it was replaced by the all new S40-1 series Gloria. The S40-1 would be a significantly bigger car than the BLSIP-3, in an attempt to move the Gloria further upmarket into a full size luxury car. At about the same time the Skyline was made substantially smaller, moving it down market into the same price and size catagory as the Datsun Bluebird and Toyota Corona.
