The 50 Series Nissan Cedric Special went into production in February 1963. The Cedric Special is a long wheel base version of the H31 series Cedric Custom. It is the first in a line of upper end luxury vehicles that would eventually evolve into the Nissan President and Infiniti Q45.
The 50 series Cedric Special is 145mm longer than the H31 Cedric Custom that it is based on, giving it an overall length of 4795mm in length. All the extra length is carried forward of the firewall, which is needed to accomodate the 2825cc 118hp OHV 6cyl. K series engine.
The Cedric Special has a different grille to the one used on the 1963 31 series Cedric, featuring a large grille badge in the centre of the grille that says Cedric Special, and the Cedric Star emblem. The side badges say Cedric and Special. On the boot of the car on the left side there is a 2800 badge, and on the right it says Cedric Special.
The Cedric Special has longer gold coloured trim pieces on the bonnet, and it also has extra stainless steel trim pieces that goes over the wheelarches and along the sills, which do not appear on any of the 31 Series Cedrics. The 50 series was reviewed by the British magazine Motor, who described all the chrome work as "the attentions of an enthusiast with a cake-icer full of chromium strip and gold lettering". The general consensus amongst Cedric enthusiasts is that Nissan may have pushed the outer limits of good taste with all the extra shiny bits.
The front bumper design is different to that of the regular 31 series Cedric, with an odd raised-up section in the middle, above the number plate.

It features a different upholstery design than the H31, with a slightly more luxurious interior than the already quite impressive Cedric Custom. The tail light design is the same as the 1963 31 series 4 cylinder cars, with round reflectors under the tail lights.
The new K series engine is an interesting device. A quick look at the specifications reveals that it has an 85x83mm bore and stroke measurement, which is exactly the same as the 4 cylinder H series engine in the 31 series Cedric. The K series engine is nothing more than a H engine with 2 extra cylinders. The K series engine was unique to the 50 series Cedric Special.
The 1963 model was only in production for half a year, and was replaced with the updated Mark II version in September 1963.
There were no other variants of the 50 Series Cedric Special.
The 50 Series Cedric Special was based on the regular 31 Series 4 cylinder Cedric.
