1962 Prince Skyline S21

Mobirise

A new trend in automotive design was beginning to appear in the early 1960s, and this involved the design of a large grille cavity at the front of the car that ran the full width of the car. This cavity would then contain not only the grille but also the headlights and front indicators. Prior to this the normal design of the front of a car would see the headlights mounted separate and above the grille opening.

In September 1962 Prince attempted to update the look of the old Skyline by redesigning the front of the car to incorporate this new design look. The result was less than successful, with the car clearly looking like a 1950s sedan with a modern 1960s front grafted on. This hybrid model only had to last until November 1963 when it was replaced by an all new thoroughly modern Skyline S50.

The S21 continued to use the 1962cc 96hp FG4B-40 engine as the previous BLSI-3 models, and all the other mechanicals remained unchanged. A pickup truck version was offered and this was called the P23. A van variant was also built, but unlike the 3 door vans of the past this new V23 version was a 5 door station wagon design. The luxury Prince Gloria BLSIP-3 version of the Skyline continued unchanged and did not get the new frontal design of the S21.
